Internship Overview

"There may be a common thread of consciousness between man and dolphin." Joan McIntyre

The Navy Marine Mammal Program has been working for decades to study and care for bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. The work being done by this institution has not only contributed to groundbreaking Naval operations but has also produced marine mammal research and medicinal techniques contributing to overall species conservation.

I was lucky enough to spend four months in their Animal Care and Training Internship and learned skills and information that will forever be invaluable to my career working with marine mammals. I was able to observe and participate in animal training and care sessions in this very hands-on program, which was an experience that has undoubtedly shaped my entire future career.

During my time in the Navy Marine Mammal Program, I was involved in animal diet preparation, facility sanitation, and equipment management. I was also able to assist trainers in numerous training sessions with both dolphins and sea lions. I provided support for many medical and husbandry procedures, from which I have learned essential skills in animal care and training.
